I was totally consumed by the drama of this storm, which moved in fast and low, so low that it seemed as though I could almost touch the clouds.

As I stood in the water taking this photograph, I suddenly felt a stinging sensation on my legs. I looked down and saw they were completely covered with mosquitoes. That’s life in the Everglades!

A photographer friend joined me on a trip to photo

A photographer friend joined me on a trip to photograph Lake Istokpoga. We got up before dawn and drove for more than an hour to reach the lake every morning. It wasn’t an easy drive because of the incredibly dense fog. Each morning, by the time we arrived, the fog would bank up along the lake’s edge, magically dissipating, leaving us disappointed. One morning, after being disappointed once again, we abandoned our goal of photographing the fog and instead launched a boat and set out to enjoy the water. After several hours of paddling around, fog started forming on the lake! I was afraid it wouldn’t last, so I jumped out of the boat, set up the camera as quickly as possible (not an easy task when standing in three feet of water), and shot four or five images before the fog disappeared. It was as though nature had orchestrated this moment just for us.

This photograph is hand-printed in Clyde’s darkroom on fiber-based paper, selenium toned, then mounted and matted to current archival standards. The photograph is a limited edition and signed by Clyde.

Big Talbot Island, a state park located in the nor

Big Talbot Island, a state park located in the northeast corner of Florida near the Georgia border, reminds me of the California coast near Carmel — both rugged and windswept.

The area provides an exciting subject for photography, thanks to the presence of barren trees and scattered driftwood. This foggy photograph of Big Talbot Island was taken on a steamy 90-degree day in summer. The humidity was unbearable.

I had a tough time focusing the lens because my glasses would fog up, then my camera lens would fog, and then my ground focusing glass would fog, and by the time I finished wiping one clear, another would fog up!

I finally had to guess at the focus and just take the picture and hope it would work.

Clyde’s photographs are hand-printed in his darkroom on fiber-based paper, selenium toned, then mounted and matted to current archival standards. These photographs are limited edition and signed by Clyde.

The opening reception for Clyde Butcher's new retr

The opening reception for Clyde Butcher's new retrospective exhibit: Lifeworks in Photography is this Friday, September 6th, from 5-7pm at the @lcmuseums Museum of Art.

Running through December 28th, this exhibit showcases 45 breathtaking large-format black-and-white photos from Clyde’s 50+ years of work across the USA, Cuba, Czech Republic, and Spain.

Although Clyde won’t be able to attend, we’re excited to share a special 10-minute video, “A Conversation with Clyde and Niki.” This film provides an intimate, behind-the-scenes look into their lives, sharing personal stories of their photography and darkroom work.
