I photographed the Bristlecone Pines in January and when we finally reached the altitude of 10,000+ I was surprised to find there was no snow in the White Mountains. Although this wasn’t good news for California’s drought, it was good news to me. The lack of snow made photographing the pines easier and a lot more fun. For a long time I had wanted to photograph the pines, so it was a pure joy to capture images of these magnificent pieces of natural sculpture.

Cayo Costa Island State Park is a barrier island off the Gulf Coast of Florida. In late June, the northern part of the island becomes an ideal spot for photography as the sun reaches its northernmost point, creating spectacular lighting conditions.

Niki and I spent an entire month aboard our boat, anchored off the island, waiting for the combination of perfect light and dramatic cloud formations. I love the beauty and power of an approaching storm – as I waited for this shot, we came close to being engulfed by a violent thunderstorm. While all the boats around us headed for cover, we stayed, hoping for the right conditions to take this photo.

After capturing the shot, we headed for the safety of the harbor just as the storm broke all around us.

In 1994, The Wilderness Society and the Forestry D

In 1994, The Wilderness Society and the Forestry Department invited me to photograph the seven wilderness areas of Florida. I was given seven days in which to achieve the project! I took it on as a challenge to see if I could do it. I had two pieces of film each day that I could shoot. This photograph is one of the locations I came upon in the Ocala National Forest.

We couldn’t pass up the invitation by Tom and Ke

We couldn’t pass up the invitation by Tom and Kerry Hoolihan to stay at their cabin in North Florida while photographing the local area. We were amazed at the beauty of the rivers and springs in North Florida and that all these years we had missed such beauty! Photographic opportunities were everywhere, which made our visits to their cabin a fantastic experience.

With the thought that there would be plenty of wat

With the thought that there would be plenty of water in Fisheating Creek for a photographic trip, I headed out for a day of fun. It was a beautiful, cool fall day and at first, everything was great and then the water sort of disappeared! We had to get out and walk, and walk and walk! When we were able to get into the boat the motor would kick up mud.

It was a difficult journey down the creek. However, with the low water, all of the cypress knees were exposed and made for wonderful photographic opportunities. We had a great day and this is one of the resulting images.
