CAVEMAN BEACH © 1976Maui, Hawaii
The title of this piece came to me as I was walking along this lonely beach in Maui. As I was setting up my camera a scraggly man came walking up to me. He told me he lived in “that cave over there, been there for three years”. One of the many stories he told me was how he could ride whales and because of that talent, he could catch them and make sausage out of the meat. Each tale was weirder than the previous tale. I was very uncomfortable and began to realize this guy was crazy and I better not turn my back on him. After taking the image, I packed up my gear and left the beach. Thus the title.
