The Butcher family is proud to share that Clyde has been awarded the National Medal of Arts.

The National Medal of Arts is the highest federal award for artists and arts patrons, presented by the President to individuals or groups for their exceptional contributions to the arts in the United States. #ArtsHumanitiesMedal

To get to this location, I traveled with individua

To get to this location, I traveled with individuals from the South Florida Water Management District on an airboat deep into Conservation Area 5, an area of land set aside to help clean the water before it flows south into the Everglades National Park. After riding through thick cattails for nearly an hour, the vegetation opened up and revealed this beautiful area of the Everglades.

Standing in the center of the Everglades is the River of Grass, an expansive landscape with shallow grassy waters that extend in every direction. Within these vast areas of vegetation, the seemingly still water is a slow moving, 40-mile-wide river.

Individual wet prairies within the Everglades reach up to 140,000 acres. The over-proliferation of cattails is a natural response to pollution as the cattails filter pollutants out of the water.

However, this image highlights an area where the Everglades’ wet prairie waters are near pristine, and the balance of freshwater provides an environment for native plants to thrive.

This photograph was taken with a Deardorff 8×10 camera on T-Max 100 film.

I had a stroke in 2017, which means that I can no longer use my large-format 8×10″ camera due to the weight (60lbs) of the gear. My life IS photography. I have a deep need to capture, on film, the beauty of the world around me.

After the stroke, I began using a digital camera, and yes, there was a learning curve involved. Eventually, I came to enjoy the camera.

I now use a walker when I photograph. My wife declares, “Clyde goes where no man has gone before in a walker!” I’ve gone through two walkers because I take them into both fresh and saltwater to capture the right angle of view. Being handicapped has not stopped me from being a photographer, nor has it changed my ability to see a composition.

When I first began photographing again, it was Myakka State Park that my wife and I enjoyed, and it was this tree, Live Oak 7, that I started shooting. This tree is my favorite oak tree in Myakka State Park.

The rough texture of the tree, along with the soft feeling of the resurrection ferns and dripping moss, always fills me with peace. No matter from which direction I photograph the tree, or what time of year, there is a composition.

This tree, and Myakka State Park, saved me and got me started photographing again. I continue photographing, even though some days are harder than others.

The act of being out in wild nature and capturing that beauty to share with others is what keeps me alive and happy.

The Loxahatchee River, one of Florida's few design

The Loxahatchee River, one of Florida's few designated Wild and Scenic Rivers, offers a glimpse into the state's natural beauty and history. Its name, which means "River of Turtles" in Seminole, reflects the rich wildlife that thrives in and around its waters.

The river winds through diverse ecosystems, from freshwater cypress swamps to coastal estuaries, creating a haven for manatees, alligators, and a wide variety of bird species.

Exploring this waterway can feel like stepping back in time, as much of it remains unspoiled, with ancient cypress trees lining its banks and offering a peaceful, secluded experience.
