We drove out to Ding Darling and spent a quiet afternoon up in their overlook tower watching the clouds roll across Pine Island Sound. The clouds in Florida are a wonder to watch. I love to photograph them as they create ever-changing shapes.

Superintendent John Donahue of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area invited me to photograph the beauty of the park.

Niki and I visited it in the springtime and experienced the joy of the flowing rivers, streams, and creeks that meander through more than thirty-five miles of pristine wilderness. Of course, everyone said we wouldn’t be able to photograph in the rain, but the May showers didn’t stop us from capturing these beautiful images. After all, that’s what umbrellas are for!

One of the artists who had the most influence on me was Ansel Adams. When I visited Oregon, I sought out beaches he had photographed and tried to learn from his compositions.

Oregon beaches are known for some of the most unique assortment of driftwood. There is so much potential to play with texture and form when photographing driftwood.

This beach had numerous trees deposited by winter storms, making for an interesting composition. The various shapes, textures, and forms of the driftwood brought to mind Ansel Adams’ style.

Mangroves may not get the spotlight, but they are Mangroves may not get the spotlight, but they are among the most vital trees on Earth.

Today, on International Mangrove Day, we celebrate these coastal defenders that thrive at the edge of the Everglades, in places like the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, a 35,000-acre maze of mangrove islands teeming with life.

Their roots cradle fish and birds, their leaves feed the food web, and their trunks stand strong against storms, protecting coastlines and communities alike.

To honor these natural guardians, we're sharing a collection of Clyde Butcher’s powerful mangrove images, photographs that celebrate the beauty, mystery, and resilience of Florida’s coastal forests.

See the Everglades through Clyde’s lens and witness the quiet power of these coastal defenders.
