Celebrating 50 years of Big Cypress National Prese

Celebrating 50 years of Big Cypress National Preserve! 📷 Big Cypress holds a special place in Clyde Butcher's heart—it’s where his journey into the wild beauty of the Everglades began. For decades, he’s captured its essence through his stunning photography.

Throughout November and December, 15% of sales from Clyde's photo taken in Big Cypress National Preserve will be donated to S.W.A.M.P. (Swamp Water and Me Program), an initiative through the Preserve that takes every 6th grader in Collier County on a swamp walk, fostering a love and respect for this land in future generations.

As I got out my camera gear and prepared to take a picture, I was amazed at the enormous number of people who would stop their cars, jump out excitedly, and run around in circles pointing up at the redwoods.

Then they’d quickly jump back in and head on to the next “pull-out” on the side of the road, never taking the time to hike the trails and experience the spiritual rejuvenation offered by the forest.

This occurrence was a reminder to me that I should not rush through life, striving merely to reach a destination, when the trip itself is a wonderful joy.

Photographs of Monument Valley don’t do justice

Photographs of Monument Valley don’t do justice to the wide-open space filled with such large monuments.

It is humbling to stand near any one of them.

It is natural to want to capture the awe of the monuments, but because of their size it is difficult to capture the immense size in a photograph.

I photographed each monument just as most photographers do, but the longer I stayed in Monument Valley the more I wanted to capture the beauty of the environment in which the monuments are located. I began photographing differently.

This image reflects the desert and the wide-open space where the monuments proudly stand.

When I saw this Calla Lily blooming in my mother-in-law’s California garden back in 1970, I couldn’t resist photographing it. The simplicity of the form combined with the sensuous feeling of the flower made for a wonderful photograph.

As a young photographer in the 1960s and 70s, I was inspired by Edward Weston’s vegetables and Georgia O’Keeffe’s flowers so I was trying to emulate some of their famous art. These artists plus Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock, and Alfred Stieglitz inspired me during my early days as a photographer.

This photo was taken with a Mamiya Press 2 ¼ x 3 ¼ medium format camera. This photograph is hand-printed in Clyde’s darkroom on fiber-based paper, selenium toned, then mounted and matted to current archival standards. The photograph is a limited edition and signed by Clyde.
