Early in the 1970s, our family lived aboard a 35'

Early in the 1970s, our family lived aboard a 35' Coronado sailboat on a mooring in Newport Harbor, California.

One foggy day, I was playing with my 35mm camera and photographing boats, seagulls, and whatever else I could see through the haze when I captured this image. Newport Harbor became one of Eye Encounters, Inc.'s most popular photographs.

In the early 1970s, I was learning the craft of photography and doing my best to imitate the great black-and-white photographers from the previous generation. One of the artists who had the most influence on me was Ansel Adams.

When I visited Oregon, I sought out beaches he had photographed and tried to learn from his compositions. Oregon beaches are known for some of the most unique assortment of driftwood. There is so much potential to play with texture and form when photographing driftwood.

This beach had numerous trees deposited by winter storms, making for an interesting composition. The various shapes, textures, and forms of the driftwood brought to mind Ansel Adams' style.

Niki Vogel and Clyde married in the summer of 1963

Niki Vogel and Clyde married in the summer of 1963. While visiting Yosemite National Park, the couple saw an Ansel Adams photography exhibit; Clyde was so impressed that he began photographing landscapes in black and white.

Early in my career, Jonathan Livingston Seagull wa

Early in my career, Jonathan Livingston Seagull was a best-selling novel. I was drawn to the image of the seagull on the book cover. Inspired, I sought to create a similar photograph featuring seagulls.

On a foggy day, I photographed two seagulls gliding through the air. They were spaced far apart, creating negative space between them. When I printed the image, I accidentally double-exposed the paper. Since it wasn't what I intended, I threw the photograph in the garbage.

Later, Niki found it and suggested I print it again since it reflected the book so well. I shared this image with my employees, and they resoundingly agreed with Niki! I learned a valuable lesson - sometimes accidents are a good thing!

“Clyde didn’t always dream of being a photographer, and he didn’t set out to become an environmentalist; both of these things organically came together through a series of life choices and choices life made for him.

Maybe it was his first visit to Yosemite with his girlfriend (now wife, Niki) that kindled affectionate feelings for natural parks and preserves.

Perhaps it was his aversion to sitting at a desk that prompted him to explore nature. It was definitely his lack of interest in drawing that led him initially to photography and propelled his first photography business.”
