A note from Niki, Clyde’s wife: Reflecting on our time in Washington, DC, I realize that receiving such an honor requires immense talent, but life is ultimately about teamwork. We are fortunate to have an incredible team!

Clyde and I have lived a unique journey as artists, striving to make a living from our passion while often just getting by. I share this because many talented artists persevere, and our experiences exemplify resilience. Our story reached a highlight in Washington, DC, where the President presented Clyde with the National Medal of Arts.

I take great pride in Clyde’s ability to create stunning black-and-white photographs that reveal the beauty of our world. I’m also grateful for our daughter Jackie, who joined our business in 2000 after selling hers. Jackie and her husband, Neal, have been a source of inspiration; Jackie’s expertise has allowed us to focus on our art as we age. After Clyde’s stroke, Neal stepped in to manage the printing of Clyde’s photography. We also appreciate our wonderful employees, who bring kindness and joy to our work.

As we returned from the event, I turned to Clyde and asked for his thoughts. After a moment of silence, he simply said, “I’m speechless.”

When I saw this mangrove sitting all alone surrounded by crystal clear water, the simplicity of the image attracted me to the scene. The transparency of the water accentuates the importance of clean water to the Florida Keys.

We have a beautiful heritage in the water surrounding the Florida Keys, let’s keep it that way for future generations.

The Disney Wilderness Preserve is the result of an innovative agreement between The Nature Conservancy, government regulatory agencies, and Disney, which may change the course of restoration and mitigation practices in Florida.

I was curious to see what it was that Disney and The Nature Conservancy had worked to protect, so when I was invited to photograph the Preserve, I jumped at the chance. The 12,5000 acres contains some of the most beautiful land I have seen.

It does my heart good to know this part of Florida will still exist in its natural state years from now because Disney and The Nature Conservancy cared enough to save it.
