Selecting the cover art for Clyde’s new book was

Selecting the cover art for Clyde’s new book was challenging until we remembered the extraordinary portrait by Nicholas Petrucci from the “Guardians of the Everglades” project.

On the cover of “Lifeworks in Photography,” you’ll find an oil painting titled “Clyde Butcher, Photographer of the Everglades” © 2010 by Nicholas Petrucci.

The book’s cover image was originally created as part of the collection “Guardians of the Everglades” which includes life-size, oil paintings of individuals credited with using their leadership skills to effect positive change in the Florida Everglades.

Petrucci’s collection started with Clyde’s image in 2010, and his likeness accompanies other preservationists such as Franklin Adams and Nathaniel Reed. Petrucci’s collection is ongoing and currently includes eleven individuals in total.

This portrait of Clyde will be displayed as a part of his “Lifeworks in Photography” exhibit that complements this new book. This traveling exhibit will be opening this September 6th, in New Mexico at Las Cruces Museum of Art. This exhibit will bring the pages of the book to life, allowing you to immerse yourself in the captivating visuals that have defined Clyde’s career.

The journey of creating this book has been nothing short of incredible – a labor of love, a spiritual exploration, and a therapeutic experience.

Capturing my father's life through the lens of his photography has been a privilege, and we are eager to bring this masterpiece to you.

"Lifeworks in Photography" is a comprehensive reflection of my father's remarkable journey spanning the last 60 years of his prolific career.

Divided into twelve captivating chapters, each section unveils a unique aspect of his life, accompanied by stunning photographs that chronicle his adventures across the United States – from state parks to national parks, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of our nation. Additionally, the book takes you on an international journey, exploring captivating scenes from Cuba, Spain, and the Czech Republic.

My father has lived an extraordinary life, both through his lens and his experiences. This book is not just a collection of photographs; it's a testament to a life dedicated to the art of photography. We are excited to share his passion, creativity, and the beauty he has witnessed with the world.

And there's more exciting news! The release of "Lifeworks in Photography" will be complemented by his new traveling exhibit, also titled "Lifeworks," opening this September 6th, in New Mexico at Las Cruces Museum of Art.

This exhibit will bring the pages of the book to life, allowing you to immerse yourself in the captivating visuals that have defined my father's career.

I often drove by this scene along the Tamiami Trai

I often drove by this scene along the Tamiami Trail highway. I’d been eyeing this area for a long time, but wanted to photograph it in both morning light and with clouds.

The two never seemed to happen together, as summer thunderstorms typically roll in during the afternoon. On this rare summer day, thunderstorms popped up in the morning, and the sun lit up the trees.

It was precisely the moment I had so long been anticipating. Even though I was on my way to an appointment, I stopped to capture this view.

Today is National Orchid Day! Did you know?

The Ghost Orchid is a very rare native orchid of Florida. It has many unique features, but one of the features Clyde finds most fascinating is that it doesn’t have any leaves. If there weren’t a bloom on the plant, you’d have no idea there was an orchid on the tree.

The Ghost Orchid is quite rare; there are believed to be fewer than 2,000 in the wild. Clyde has been lucky enough to be able to photograph it multiple times in the south Florida Everglade swamps.

I photographed the Bristlecone Pines in January an

I photographed the Bristlecone Pines in January and when we finally reached the altitude of 10,000+ I was surprised to find there was no snow in the White Mountains. Although this wasn’t good news for California’s drought, it was good news to me. The lack of snow made photographing the pines easier and a lot more fun. For a long time I had wanted to photograph the pines, so it was a pure joy to capture images of these magnificent pieces of natural sculpture.
