Pictured: Clyde photographing a scale model of a museum he designed and built in architecture school in 1962. Rather than drawing, he found this to be the best way for him to create designs.

In 1964, Clyde wrote his senior thesis describing his use of photography in architectural design. Later that year, he graduated with a degree in architecture from Cal Poly.

In 1960, Clyde enrolled in Cal Poly and majored in Architecture. In 1961, to help with his architectural presentations, Clyde created a crude but dependable homemade camera, which is shown in this picture.

Using this camera, he took pictures of people, plants, and furniture, developed the images in miniature, and placed them in the models instead of drawing each item. His professors recognized his creativity and encouraged Clyde to write his thesis on his process.

In 1960, Clyde graduated from Beaumont High School

In 1960, Clyde graduated from Beaumont High School in southern California. While in high school, he worked in a cabinet shop and developed an interest in building things.

He enjoyed working on projects such as making furniture and even built a boat. He often drew boat designs the way other children would draw things like homes with flowers and trees.

Clyde played football for a brief period but had to quit after breaking his leg during practice.

His parents took him on family trips to wild and scenic locations, further fueling his love for the outdoors.

As Clyde entered adulthood, he witnessed the dawn of the space age, and the birth of the modern environmental movement, both of which led him down a path toward his destiny.

Throughout his childhood, Clyde’s family lived in Kentucky, Ohio, and Colorado. As they traveled throughout the United States, his parents introduced him to many national parks, sparking his interest in photography.
