SAND DUNES 1 © 1970Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, Glamis Dunes, CA
When I lived in California, my friends and I often ventured to the Glamis Dunes for dune-buggy adventures. The area was divided; the south side of the road was designated for buggies, while the north side remained remote and accessible only on foot. As a photographer, I was more interested in the north side with its unique shapes and untouched textures. I learned from the locals that August was the best time of year to photograph the dunes. Glamis had no hotels, so I had to stay in a nearby town. Before the sun rose and well before the scorching heat, I drove out to the dunes and hiked during the cooler morning hours. I got the photograph I had hoped for, and it was a wonderful experience until the sun’s full force began beating down on me. When I got back to my car, it was a sweltering 115 degrees!
