CAVEMAN BEACH © 1976Maui, Hawaii
As I set up my camera on this lonely beach in Maui, a scraggly man approached me. He pointed and said, “I live in that cave over there, been there for three years.” One of the many stories he shared with me that day was how he could ride whales, and because of that talent, he could catch them and make sausage out of their meat. As he told his tales, each tale grew wilder than the previous one. I was becoming uncomfortable as I realized it might be safer to focus on the position of the great whale slayer rather than the landscape. After taking the image, I packed up my gear and left the beach. I named this image to remember my brief encounter with this unusual character.
