Clyde majestically captures the public natural lands set aside by the Federal and State governments for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.

Clyde’s images of these treasured landscapes document the changing environment, capturing what is there today and encouraging us to enjoy the beauty of nature. Clyde’s images speak for countless diverse places of wilderness and respite found throughout all of America, allowing us an appreciation of our land.

“Clyde represents what we hope all great artists of our country hold true in their work: the responsibility of communicating the goodness of our world through the arts. Moreover, he has used his photographs as learning tools to inspire others, sharing his concern for our limited resources and endangered habitats” –Jimmy Carter, Former President of the United States

Clyde’s Cuba Exhibit
Ave Maria University

Clyde’s Exhibit Cuba: The Natural Beauty will be on display at Ave Maria University, December, 13 – February 28th.  The exhibit will be located at Canizaro Gallery, which is located on the second floor of the library. Clyde will be at Ave Maria University for a book signing on January 30, 5:30 – 7:30 pm. This collection documents Clyde’s journey through Cuba on three separate expeditions. Discovering the warmth and hospitality of the Cuban people, through his photography, he has helped open Cuba’s natural beauty to the world. From mountain waterfalls to lush green jungles and grassy swamps to sandy beaches, his photographs reveal the seductive beauty, subtle grandeur, and majesty of this diverse island. The expedition to Cuba took him to places not seen by visitors in over fifty years. Cuba invited Clyde, as an official photographer, and conservationists from across the Americas and the Caribbean to meet in 2002, a year declared by the United Nations as “The Year of the Mountains.” The U.N. encouraged countries across the world to hold environmental conferences about mountain conservation. Clyde saw this as an opportunity to make a positive difference in the world and wholeheartedly photographed the remarkable island. Clyde Butcher’s images of Cuba presented in this book will not simply be a melancholy record of what once was, but rather a celebration of what will always be.”  –Robert L. Bendick Jr., Director, Southeast Division, The Nature Conservancy

America’s Everglades Exhibit
Youngstown, OH

This expansive wilderness collection represents the many years Clyde spent exploring the remote regions of the Everglades, experiencing its changes. It is a diverse and complex territory which reveals its beauty in many ways. His photographs reveal wild and natural places where few humans have ventured, and the images capture remarkable solitude and wonder. The Everglades is one of the largest wetlands in the world and the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Shaped and sustained by seasonally flowing shallow water, the Everglades is home to dozens of threatened and endangered species, massive flocks of wading birds, recovering populations of alligators, crocodiles, and millions of insects. Exceptional for its diverse combination of rich plant and wildlife communities, varied habitats, and remote wilderness, the Everglades has perhaps most importantly become a beacon for conservation.  “Clyde Butcher’s remarkable photographs give us access to nature we rarely see or experience. They not only reveal the intimate and majestic beauty of the Everglades–and the need to save this fragile environment–they also remind us of the abiding kinship we mortals share when we work together to preserve these magnificent places. Butcher’s art is a national treasure.” –Ken Burns, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker
