Niki Butcher Hand Painted Photography

Niki Butcher has been photographing throughout the United States and other tropical locations with her husband, legendary black-and-white photographer Clyde Butcher, for over five decades, capturing the beauty and uniqueness of places and people. Niki finds the beauty not only in nature but also in the historical buildings and interesting people that inhabit the landscapes. Inspired by the hand-painted postcards of the 1930s, Niki first started painting her black and white photographs in the 1980s. Using her own photographs, oil paints, Q-tips, and cotton balls, she turned landscapes into dreamscapes and reality into fantasy. Today, Niki uses a similar technique to paint digitally. She first photographs with a digital camera and then paints her images using Photoshop and a Wacom tablet.

Mangroves are a wondrous plant. Imagine a tree tha Mangroves are a wondrous plant. Imagine a tree that survives in saltwater! I am constantly amazed by their sculptural beauty and the important part they play in the ecosystem of the world.

I wanted to photograph this mangrove from a high position, so we pulled our boat up onto the beach and I set up my tripod on the bow of the boat. It was tricky because the boat refused to sit still; it kept bouncing around in the waves.

I was having difficulty taking the photograph, so my wife, Niki, tried to steady the boat. I took several shots but finally managed to get one that had no movement.

Sloshing around in the lush green summer swamps of Sloshing around in the lush green summer swamps of the Everglades fills Clyde with a deep joy of being alive. He says, “There is something primeval about it that connects to my very soul.”

When he came across these Guzmania bromeliads, he was overwhelmed by the abundance of the plants around him. Today he’s glad to have this photograph, as this fragile ecosystem is under attack by the invasive Mexican bromeliad weevil.

The Guzmania population today is drastically reduced, and overall only one percent of the plants left are adults.

The southern rim of Lake Istokpoga is a magical pl The southern rim of Lake Istokpoga is a magical place. It is filled with large beautiful cypress trees that survived the logging of the early 1900’s due to the fact that their interiors have large hollow areas. Because of the hollows, the wood isn’t good for commercial use, but they do make wonderful photography!

I took this picture while standing in the water, after waiting for several hours for the light to be right. Gators were bellowing at me, and thunder and lightning was booming all around.

To my dismay, when I proceeded to pack up my gear, I found that I had sunk so far into the muck I couldn’t get out. The suction was too great!

Eventually, I figured out how to get out: by turning myself in circles, I made the hole I was caught in larger and larger, thus breaking the suction. I had to screw myself out of the muck!

Unfortunately, we were only there for one day, and that was just not long enough. There were so many photographic opportunities in that wonderfully strange environment.
