I photographed this scene with a Canon digital camera in early autumn just after an afternoon seasonal storm drenched this imperiled habitat. Regions like this wetland prairie are crucial as feeding grounds for deer and wading birds. The shrub-free grasses are hallmarks of a thriving, healthy ecosystem that is undergoing frequent, necessary periodic burns. Without fire, these areas would be lost to woody plants such as wax myrtle, baccharis, cocoplum, and other larger hardwoods.
