PINE ISLAND SOUND © 1999
Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge

It had been a very hectic week, and we needed a break. We drove out to Ding Darling and spent a quiet afternoon up in their overlook tower watching the clouds roll across Pine Island Sound. The clouds in Florida are a wonder to watch. I love to photograph them as they create ever-changing shapes. ST. JOE DRAGON © 2003
Florida Panhandle

St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, Florida – The sky had become overcast making the weather perfect for photographing the interior of the area. Niki and I were wandering around and came across this wonderful piece of driftwood sitting in a soft spongy growth of lichen. The contrast between the rough and the soft was exciting to me, so I took the picture. It wasn’t until I got home and developed the film that I realized I had photographed a dragon! After standing in the rain for several hours waiting for a break in the clouds, I was able to capture this image in the Everglades National Park. PANTHER KEY 1 © 1999
Everglades National Park

This mangrove was standing alone along the edge of Panther Key in the Ten Thousand Islands of South Florida. With the water and clouds, it made for a nice photograph. Panther Key 1 was taken with a Clyde-O-Wide 4×5 (hand-built by Clyde) camera. OCHOPEE © 1986
Western Everglades

The Everglades is a place where I sought beauty and solace. Its wild, diverse landscape offered refuge and a source of healing for me after losing my son. This iconic image of the Everglades was the second photograph I took after I decided to photograph solely in black and white. Being from California and relatively new to Florida, I had just started learning about the Everglades ecosystem. This view called to me with its vast wilderness and mountainous clouds. Cattails: Warning from the Swamp The Everglades is known for its marshy expanses of grasses and aquatic plants, creating dotted blankets of vegetation across the landscape. However, this image also shows the effect of a disturbance on the ecosystem. Although cattails are native to the Everglades, their proliferation in this small area indicates higher than normal levels of fertilizer have fueled their growth. Ochopee was taken with a Deardorff 8×10 camera on Tri-X film. NORTH FORK NEW RIVER © 2003
Ft. Lauderdale, FL

In 2003, the Broward County Cultural Affairs approached me asking if I would like to participate in “Arts in Public Places” by placing three one-of-a-kind photographs in the Ft. Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport. The images were to be six feet by sixteen feet and placed in terminals 2 and 3 above the escalators. John Rude, Executive Director of Broward Urban River Trails, brought together Margaret McPhearson & David from South Florida Water Management District and Kevin Carter, for an adventurous trip up the New River in Ft. Lauderdale. The Broward Urban River Trails had been working to clean up the New River and reconnect it to its original water source: the Everglades. To my amazement, I found more than houses along the New River. Many photographic opportunities presented themselves and I had a great time capturing a part of the river that few had photographed. NEW RIVER STRAND 2 © 2014
Western Everglades

I had a great day spending time out in Big Cypress National Preserve photographing the beauty of the place I love so much. The day was perfect – a sky filled with bulbous clouds rolling across the horizon and very little wind. As I photographed the clouds began coming together to form a very large storm. I kept photographing until I felt the cool wind of the coming rain, then grabbed my gear and made a run for it. I got to the car just as the downpour began. This photograph is printed on a large format Epson printer using genuine Epson ink and archival Harman Hahnemuhle paper. Each photograph is digitally signed, then mounted and matted to current archival standards. This is a limited edition series and each photograph is numbered.

MYAKKA 6 © 2001
Myakka River State Park, Sarasota

I’ve enjoyed getting to know Myakka State Park. It is one of the oldest and largest State Parks in Florida and has an amazing variety in its environment. When I took this image it was summer and the park was closed due to flooding, but the rangers were kind enough to drive me through the park on the flooded roads so I could photograph. It was a fun day having the park all to myself, and because there was water everywhere there were a lot of photographic opportunities. Now that we have added a second location for my gallery and studio in Venice, I am finding the opportunity to explore the area. This image is the first picture I have taken of the Myakka River. I’m looking forward to many more! As I was setting up to take this photograph, the clouds began disappearing. I was fortunate to get in a couple of shots before the sky became a solid blue expanse without one cloud in it!
