A Word from ClydeI have always felt that the best photographs are taken in surroundings near to your heart. When my son was killed by a drunk driver in 1986, I fled into the Big Cypress Preserve. I spent countless hours in the swamp, eventually building our home and gallery within the pristine ecosystem. Spending time in the swamp and capturing its primal beauty restoredmy soul. After my stroke in 2017, I knew I needed to find that peace once again. I began an exploration of my new backyard searching for the tranquility I had found in Big Cypress. This search would bring me to Myakka.

Where is the Everglades?Located in southern Florida, the Greater Everglades ecosystem stretches from wet prairies near Orlando in the center of the state, past the southernmost tip of mainland Florida, to coastal estuaries in Florida Bay. Although Everglades National Park was the first U.S. park created for biological merit (rather than geological features), the Everglades ecosystem is only partially protected within park borders. The Greater Everglades ecosystem extends through most of the southern third of the state.

Myakka RiverUltra-white sand beaches and magnificent sunsets have long defined Sarasota, however just nine miles east of I-75 you will find an environment just as alluring, exotic and primal, the Myakka River. For over twenty years, Clyde Butcher has explored the deeper regions of Myakka and spent seasons experiencing its changes and its diverse ecosystems. Designated as a Florida Wild and Scenic River, the tannic waters flow through bottomland swamp and freshwater marsh spilling into lakes and sinkholes. Alligators, turtles, and cottonmouths swim in the river. Herons, cranes, and limpkins strut through its shallows, feeding in the muck. In the rainy season, the river rises and floods. In the dry months, the river shrinks and wildlife once again line the banks of the Myakka.
