Clyde Butcher: Artist, Preservationist, ActivistThrough my images, I hope people will come to a greater understanding of the beauty we will lose if the preservation and restoration of our environment are not at the forefront of our thoughts. As stewards of the land, we must establish an ethic toward the earth that will lead the way toward a deeper and more personal connection to nature. As an artist, I reach deep within myself to express an image that will touch another. It is my sincerest hope that the vision I give to you of the Everglades will inspire you to love and protect our environment for generations to come.Ecosystems of the Greater EvergladesTo many people, the term Everglades evokes the image of broad, open, wet grasslands. However, to Clyde Butcher, who for over thirty years has explored its deeper regions and spent seasons experiencing its changes, it is a diverse and complex territory that reveals its beauty in many ways. His photographs explore a land where small elevation differences bring immense changes in plant communities and terrain and capture how each is interconnected. Seen from the air, the Everglades is a natural mosaic of scattered prairies and sawgrass marshes, pinelands and hardwood hammocks, cypress swamps, mangrove islands, and estuarine communities. The Everglades is a natural place like nowhere else on earth. The River of GrassThere are no other Everglades in the world. They are, they have always been, one of the unique regions of the earth; remote, never wholly known. Nothing anywhere else is like them.-
