Cuba: The Natural Beauty
Newly redesigned, this second edition reprint features 50 of Clyde's iconic fine art black and white photographs of the Cuban landscape and a special color photo journal by Niki Butcher.
CUBA: THE NATURAL BEAUTY
This collection documents Clyde’s journey through Cuba on three separate expeditions. Discovering the warmth and hospitality of the Cuban people, through his photography, he has helped open Cuba’s natural beauty to the world. From mountain waterfalls to lush green jungles and grassy swamps to sandy beaches, his photographs reveal the seductive beauty, subtle grandeur, and majesty of this diverse island. The expedition to Cuba took him to places not seen by visitors in over fifty years.
Cuba invited Clyde, as an official photographer, and conservationists from across the Americas and the Caribbean to meet in 2002, a year declared by the United Nations as “The Year of the Mountains.” The U.N. encouraged countries across the world to hold environmental conferences about mountain conservation. Clyde saw this as an opportunity to make a positive difference in the world and wholeheartedly photographed the remarkable island.

The Year of the MountainsThe year 2002 was declared by the United Nations as “The Year of the Mountains.” The UN encouraged countries across the world to hold environmental conferences about mountain conservation. Cuba hosted the conference for the region, inviting conservationists from across the Americas and Caribbean region to meet. The purpose of “Taller para el Desarrollo Sostenible dela Montaña” (The Conference for the Sustainable Habitat of the Mountain) was to make significant progress in improving relations between our countries regarding environmental issues.

A word from Clyde and NikiThe cool, humid air of the mountain jungle embraced us as the green wilderness saturated our eyes. Green . . . the color of life. The mountains shot straight up from the tiny valley floor where the village occupied a cozy nesting place among royal palms, ancient tree ferns, orchids and a myriad of green plants. Cuba, a land so near and yet so far. A land shrouded in the green mystery of jungle forests, tall mountains that plunge into a deep marine blue ocean, grassy swamps, white sand beaches lined with turquoise water and palms, fields of sugar cane, mountain waterfalls and the mogotes of west Cuba that jut up into the sky. A land one thousand miles long and more varied than we ever imagined.

Praise for Clyde Butcher“Clyde Butcher’s images of Cuba presented in this book will not simply be a melancholy record of what once was, but rather a celebration of what will always be.” -Robert L. Bendick Jr., Director, Southeast Division, The Nature Conservancy
