The Aspen trees had just begun to change into thei The Aspen trees had just begun to change into their fall colors as I entered the high country of Utah. I had just spent a week down in the desert, and as we came up into the mountains it felt good to once again be among the trees. When I saw this scene, with the light reflecting off the bright yellow leaves of the Aspen trees, it gave me a wonderful feeling of being alive. I scrambled to capture the scene before the sun disappeared.

I had spent the day photographing deep in the Ever I had spent the day photographing deep in the Everglades with my friend, Oscar Thompson.

As the day grew late, I saw the sky develop into an extraordinary cloud pattern, and I knew I’d have to make a choice. I could safely leave the Everglades while there was still light, or stay and take the photo.

I chose the photograph. As the sun fell behind the horizon and the land shifted to pitch black, the swamp came alive with the sounds of nocturnal animals and insects.

I was very grateful to be with Oscar, a fifth-generation Floridian, who was familiar with this daunting land.

The Canopy Trail in Myakka leads to the wonderful The Canopy Trail in Myakka leads to the wonderful experience of walking through the treetops. The park, through the financial support of the community and the help of Meg Lowman, built a suspension bridge through the tops of the trees, so that we can experience the environment of treetops. Wonderful!

On the day I took this picture, the trail was flooded. It looked like a water wonderland, and remarkably different from the other times I had walked the trail.

Driving up Highway One along the coast of Oregon i Driving up Highway One along the coast of Oregon is very dramatic. It seems that at every turn in the road there is another wonderful photographic opportunity.

Bandon Beach is one of my favorite stops along the coast. The beach is littered with monuments of rock that have been whittled away by the force of the ocean. It’s a joy to experience and fun to photograph.

Mangroves are a wondrous plant. Imagine a tree tha Mangroves are a wondrous plant. Imagine a tree that survives in saltwater! I am constantly amazed by their sculptural beauty and the important part they play in the ecosystem of the world.

I wanted to photograph this mangrove from a high position, so we pulled our boat up onto the beach and I set up my tripod on the bow of the boat. It was tricky because the boat refused to sit still; it kept bouncing around in the waves.

I was having difficulty taking the photograph, so my wife, Niki, tried to steady the boat. I took several shots but finally managed to get one that had no movement.
